Wholesalers have taken a stand regarding the use hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO) in food.
Parfetts Cash Carry has set a challenge for all products to be free from HVO by the end of 2008. It is currently having informal chats with suppliers and outlining plans for the future.
Hydrogenated vegetable oil has been linked as a cause of heart disease and clogging of the arteries, as the body cannot break it down.
Parfetts has made the decision to put pressure on those suppliers who continue to use HVOs in their products and to ban any brand from its depots that does not meet the challenge.
Brakes has set its own target to be remove all HVO from its own brand range by the end of the year. As part of an on-going programme Brakes has already removed HVOs from a number of products in its own brand range and since January this year no new products launched under the Brakes brand have contained them.
Now Brakes is working with its suppliers on the remaining products. Brakes is also encouraging other brand suppliers to remove HVOs from products it distributes.
