Wellocks, the national fresh produce wholesaler, has been named ‘Most Outstanding Business of the Year’ (Medium/Large) at the 2016 Pendle Business Awards.
The Pendle Business Awards is one of Lancashire’s most prestigious events, recognising the outstanding achievement of businesses across the region, and is organised by Pendle Vision and Pendle Council.
Richard Wellock, founder of the Nelson, Lancashire-based wholesaler, said: “This is a great achievement for Wellocks, which has grown from a small family business into an employer of almost 400 staff. With a determined and continued passion to provide the perfect ingredient, we are constantly looking for innovative ideas to expand our service to chefs and restaurants. We are very, very proud to accept this award. The Pendle Business Award has been warmly received by all staff – and we’d like to give a big thank you to the dedicated individuals who made it possible. We’ve been doing this for 55 years so we must be doing something right.”
Wellocks is ranked in the Investec/Times Mid-Market 100 Fastest-Growing Privately Owned Companies in the UK. Turnover increased by over 20% from 2014 to 2015 to almost £40 million and staff size has tripled since 2010. With distribution hubs in Aylesbury, Tewkesbury and Motherwell served from its depot in Lancashire, Wellocks delivers tonnes of fresh, dairy, dry and prepared produce daily to customers all over the country, including many top hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants such as Gleneagles, Exclusive Hotels and Brasserie Blanc group. Customers include many of the UK’s leading chefs such as Michael Wignall, Simon Rogan and Daniel Clifford.
Wellocks is currently renovating a 20,000 sq ft building adjacent to its HQ to serve as a new food preparation centre, an on-site garage for its growing fleet and extra warehouse space – all due for completion at the end of 2016.
Richard Wellock collected the award at the fifth Pendle Business Awards evening along with Joanne Harker, Wellocks’ longest serving staff member.
