The Today’s Group achieved a 6% growth in sales last year compared with overall growth for the sector of just 0.6%, according to managing director Rodney Hunt.
Speaking at the group’s annual exhibition at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, he said it had performed particularly strongly in licensed with wine showing tremendous growth.
Foodservice had been another part of the business performing strongly with sales up 7% on the previous year.
Hunt said the Brandwagon promotion that visited major members’ depots over the summer had also been phenomenally successful, with some depots taking a week’s turnover in a single day.
Hunt conceded that there had been some unhappiness among members when subscriptions were increased last year. But he said Today’s was still a very low-cost operation and he pointed out that after some renegotiations members had agreed a two-year subscription deal.
Looking ahead, he said this year’s major promotion, Football Crazy, had attracted very strong support from suppliers and he expected it to be even more successful than the Brandwagon.
He said the group was also pressing ahead with the roll-out of the Today’s fascia, through seven members who offer deliveries. There are currently 45 stores with the fascia, and he expected that figure to double by the end of the year.
