The Today’s Group will make its support packages for retailers a key element of its strategy for 2005, managing director Rodney Hunt told its annual conference in Tenerife.
Referring to IGD predictions that symbol group membership was set to grow, Hunt said: “Most people would respect the IGD forecasts on share of market and we will certainly be at the forefront in developing packages to assist independent retailers who aspire to symbol group status and all that it means to their trading success.”
He revealed that there were now 11 stores operating within the Today’s Local or Today’s Express symbol group and conversions of 18 more stores were under way.
“Whatever the format, sales figures for those stores that were converted during 2004 have shown mind-blowing increases in turnover after adopting the Today’s symbol fascia,” he added.
Today’s was also committed to retailers who did not feel able to make the level of investment required for the full symbol group, said Hunt, offering its Day-Today fascia and the VIT or PCC retail clubs.
Currently 600 stores are in the fascia group, with an additional 62 being processed.
He added: “All of these stores have access to the Nisa Chill and Nisa Freeze central distribution operation. A good offering of chilled fresh food and fruit, veg and flowers, is essential to a good convenience store today.”
Hunt also revealed that the group would be taking “Just 18″ as its promotional theme this year, marking the 18th anniversary of the group.
In addition to an extensive media campaign there will be a “brand wagon” which will make its debut at the Today’s Exhibition next month.
This will be a 40ft trailer which will visit Today’s depots all over the UK during the summer to set up party days.
