One gets an idea of Tesco’s fresh produce profitability by looking at their pricing in the seasonal asparagus market. Its pound;14.70 per kilo equivalent price for asparagus tips in late May compares with a local farmers retail price of pound;5.80 a kilo, a premium of over 150%. Tesco did, however, discount short life product to pound;11.70 a kilo, still more than double the local farmers’ price. Still, Sir Terry’s pound;3.98m salary and perks has to be paid somehow. Every little helps.

All the more reason why Tesco’s 10 recently advertised ideas about what it can do to add value to the community – and be good neighbours – really grates. Express shopfronts blending in better with local settings, working closer with local communities on new superstore developments and understanding local issues and concerns better, suggests it has every intention to dominate this arena.

And, degradable carrier bags aside, as Tesco says – this is just a start! Don’t it make you feel sick.
