David Glennon, marketing manager of ACNielsen, said that an important piece of information from its market research service is where things are consumed once they are purchased.
“One third of all sandwiches bought are consumed at the workplace/college, and over one third of soft drinks are actually consumed while still on the move. Hardly surprising then that sports top bottles are becoming so popular.”
He also noted the importance of fresh. “When we asked people through our market reseach surveys what products they were trying to include or increase in their diet by far the most important categories were fruit and veg with over 80% positive responses.”
Glennon said that fresh has grown each year for the last four years and that every 1% share gain amounts to an extra billion pounds worth of sales. This is benefiting the independent sector as well.
He added: “The frozen veg industry is going on the offensive as the market shifts towards fresh. They are cleverly taking the nutritional stance that because the vegetables are frozen so soon after being harvested that they actually retain more nutrients than the average fresh vegetables you may get at your average store.”
