Increased promotional offers by sponsors Tetley Tea and McVitie’s, and new brand support from Tate amp; Lyle, will boost this year’s National Cuppa Day (NCD) which falls on June 3 in National Independents’ Week (NIW), the centrepiece of the FWD My Shop is Your Shop campaign.
Independent retailers will have access to free packs of tea, sugar and biscuits in the deals, which have added power following the launch of NCD in 2008. This will give them starter packs for offering customers a free cuppa and a biscuit to promote the store as a friendly local amenity.
Five packs are included in the McVitie’s offer compared with four in 2008. These are McVitie’s Digestive, Hob Nobs, Rich Tea, Ginger Nuts and Fruit Shortcake. They are all price-marked at 99p on a four packs for the price of three offer.
Tetley Tea will add 40s tea bags to the Cuppa Day deal in addition to the 80s featured last year. Tetley 40s will be offered at 12 for the price of 11 and 80s at six for the price of five.
Tate amp; Lyle will offer a case price promotion on Granulated 500g which will deliver a minimum of 10 for the price of 9.
Point of sale materials will be available to help independents maximise the impact of the day.
Alan Toft, MSYS chairman, said: “Genuine supporters of the independent sector such as Tetley Tea, McVitie’s, and this year Tate amp; Lyle, are demonstrating in a professional manner how the MSYS marketing platform can be used to help the independent sector beat the recession.
“Before MSYS arrived the sector did not possess this new promotional opportunity, giving added positive profile to the FWD and its members and the retailers on whom they depend. Last year lots of independents took advantage of NCD using the free packs to give local customers a cuppa and a biscuit as a thank you or a friendly gesture celebrating localness. This year we will have a lot of support from suppliers and wholesalers who are deploying directors, senior managers and staff to help in store during NIW and some of these will be helping out on Cuppa Day itself.
“We are currently co-ordinating the offers of help during NIW that we are receiving.
“MSYS campaigners are heartened by the growing intensity of the support the MSYS campaign is receiving at field level.”
