Summer sun drives Appleby Westward sales and service

Appleby Westward is boasting what it says are record service levels to its Spar retailers and a “big jump” in year-on-year sales on the back of good summer weather.

The south-west based wholesalers says ambient sales have risen by 19% year-on-year for a five week period running into early July, with a 15% increase in chilled and frozen products over the same period.

The Saltash-based company, which services nearly 300 Spar stores throughout the region, says service levels have seen nearly 98.5% product availability over the past 13 weeks compared to nearly 98.2% over the same period last year. Deliveries of chilled products have run at 99.7% on time in a 16-week period from mid-March (98.6% in same period of 2013), with some weeks recording a 100% level.

The wholesaler credits the consistent spell of warm weather, its investment in a new, more advanced fleet of vehicles and a new telesales function with the improved performance of the business.

Mark McCammond, managing director, said: “We have maintained service levels above 98% for the last two years and are offering a consistently reliable first class service to our retailers. We introduced a telesales operation in the spring and that has enhanced our service to retailers and presented them with a real incremental opportunity, while our investment last year in new vehicles to meet demand has also started to pay dividends.

He continued: “Our focus remains strongly on growing our fresh food Features > Business, introducing exciting new store formats and recruiting new stores to the Features > Business,” adding that if the settled summer weather continued, the company expected sales to be even more buoyant as retailers took advantage of Spar’s ready-to-eat summertime range of products, which offers cross category sales opportunities.
