Spar invests in new stores

Spar wholesalers are investing in new store openings around the UK as a result of the Co-operative Group’s acquisition of Somerfield.

Three of the six Spar RDCs – AF Blakemore Son, Capper Co and James Hall Co – have bought a total of 11 former Somerfield stores with some earmarked for EuroSpar conversion.

The EuroSpar format is different to Spar. The stores range from 5,000sq ft to 10,000sqft and basket spend is higher to accommodate a bigger family weekly trolley shop as well as offering the benefits of a traditional convenience store. Henderson Wholesale currently supplies 13 EuroSpar stores in Northern Ireland.

Commenting on recent developments Spar managing director Jerry Marwood said: “The purchase of the Somerfield stores is a big opportunity for us. As a collection of well-funded private businesses Spar is ideally placed to take advantage of the changes happening in our market place. Along with Somerfield stores we have also voiced our interest in individual Woolworths stores.”
