So Woolies will see the light of day again as an on line retailer of all those things people loved best about them.

New owner Shop Direct is inviting consumers to recall ‘fond memories’ to help create its on line range. Is that a first in retailing history?

My local independent store closed today – for a major re-fit. It is a brave move in the current economical climate but here is one forward thinking businessman determined to improve his offering. The refit heralds the arrival of a different wholesaler, too, one that has been at the forefront of convenience store retailing from the beginning and knows how to add ‘sparkle’.

While I am sure we will still see them in the cash and carry from time to time, I eagerly await the re-opening to see how my community responds to the many new facilities such as in-store bakery and food to go, as well as a wider selection of fresh and frozen foods and improved off licence. What other way forward is there. Invest or die!

I haven’t seen the new Cadbury Dairy Milk ‘Eyebrows’ advertising yet but the pound;4.7m investment on TV and cinema screens throughout February and March will help maintain the growth the brand enjoyed last year following their brilliant ‘gorilla’ and ‘airport trucks’ ad campaigns. No doubt the new ‘contains milk’ statement on packaging will bring a smile to many faces.
