Prospects for next Easter are good says Hancocks

Hancocks is predicting a strong showing from the confectionery category in the first half of 2006

Richard Brittle, purchasing director of the confectionery specialist, emphasised Hancocks had made a strong showing in 2005, and said: “Low pricing, obesity debates and poor stock availability have all had a negative effect on the industry. But we are far from negative for 2006.”

He said the retro trend was set to continue, with retro sweets such as Flying Saucers, Cola Cubes, Rhubarb and Custard and Aniseed Balls all currently experiencing double-digit growth.
Brittle was also upbeat about the prospects for Easter, as long as retailers were careful in choosing their range so they did not compete with the supermarkets.

Next year’s World Cup presented more opportunity, he said.
