WH HM Young’s Leeds site will be running as a dual-temperature Palmer and Harvey depot within six months, according to P H managing director of operations Julian Streeter.
Following the takeover of Young’s last month, Streeter said a chilled area would be installed in the depot and the P H chilled and ambient product range would be introduced within six months.
He said the depot was a good fit for the P H network because he had been looking to strengthen its coverage in Yorkshire and the east coast. P H already has a depot in Leeds, but it is for its drinks operation, Winerite.
Existing P H customers in the Yorkshire and east coast region will now be served from the acquired depot, while Young’s customers within the territories of other P H depots will be transferred to them. Streeter said he envisaged this would result in extra business at Young’s and more staff would need to be recruited in addition to investment in new dual-temperature delivery vehicles.
WH HM Young is a member of Key Lekkerland, and Streeter said that P H had already demonstrated its commitment to Key following its takeover of T A Symonds, another Key Lekkerland member, six months ago.
Glasgow-based JW Filshill is now the only independently owned wholesaler left in Key Lekkerland, with P H owning two of the four members.
