Wholesalers can expect more promotions from Unilever UK Foods tailored to their individual requirements, according to sales director Tony Smith.
Speaking at the official opening of its new distribution centre at Cannock in Staffordshire, he said a new re-packing facility at the depot would give the company much greater flexibility in the promotions it could provide.
He said: “It will provide far greater opportunity for product differentiation, and enable us to handle more specific and sophisticated promotions. I hope wholesalers will talk to us about their requirements.”
The depot is the result of a pound;50m investment and has space to house 70,000 pallets with potential to expand to 100,000 pallets. Smith said the depot had been “future proofed” to cope with future expansion of the business.
The centre will handle all Unilever UK Foods’ brands and Smith said it would provide improved flexibility and service levels at the lowest cost.
Much of the centre is automated with pallets moving around the depot on roller conveyors controlled by a state-of-the-art warehouse management system. Pallets are placed on racks up to 13 tiers high by automated cranes.
