We can certainly appreciate why this years’ National BBQ week commenced on 29th May! The National BBQ Association and its big brand food and drink sponsors must be a little disappointed by the summer washout but their Gastro Alfresco campaign supported by the country wide bus roadshow and a good web site might yet produce some good results but more emphasis must be placed on the independent sector if this activity is repeated next year.

The Mars free chiller and dairy deck merchandiser giveaway is a great idea but with just 1,000 available on a ‘first come-first served one per store basis’, just how responsive will retailers be. Mars reps can also provide a vertical chiller suction unit on request but confectionery is displayed close to the checkout to minimise pilferage while chiller units can often be ‘out of sight’.

If Magners Original cider from Ireland helped to wake up the cider market – then Scandinavia and Pear based ciders will help take the category on to a new level. S N’s introduction of Upcider from Finland is the latest import, and we anticipate more arrivals and real pressure on shelf space.
