The Mintel report on energy drinks made enjoyable reading even if I didn’t understand a word of it.

In spite of having less money in their pockets, they are happy to pay for added energy to facilitate their full-on lifestyles.” Quick, pass the Red Bull!

Principal food and drink Olympic Games’ sponsors are starting to come out to play but our focus remains on Christmas and making sure our customers have everything they need to cash in on the festivities. Last year’s appalling weather at the end of November and early December was great for business so we are up against some pretty big figures.

It is a worry to see Asda step up its proposition for small caterers, although there is nothing new about multiples enjoying a slice of our business. I bumped into a local retailer at Lidl recently. He wasn’t bothered that he was sourcing from a competitor. He wanted the lowest cost prices on a selection of goods and it just so happened that Lidl could provide them. Has the time come to widen our net and ease back on our strictly ‘trade-only’ policy?
