Management team at BWG set for buy-out

Managers at BWG, the Irish distribution giant which owns the Spar and Mace franchises in the Irish Republic, and the Spar wholesaler for south-west England Appleby Westward, are expected to complete the purchase of the company from Electra Partners.

BWG chief executive Leo Crawford and his management team already own 15% of the company, and are reported to have teamed up with John Clohisey, a major owner of Spar stores in the Irish Republic who owns 20% of BWG, to buy out Electra’s share in a deal that would value the group at e400m.

The group was sold by Pernod Ricard in 2002 after it decided to divest non core activities.

Long drawn out negotiations finally valued the group at about e220m and it has achieved major growth in the Republic since then.
