Makro has undergone a month of management changes, including the surprise departure of commercial director Huw Edwards, the only board member to survive the dismissal of his fellow directors last June.
Edwards joined Makro from Asda in April and was part of a new board structure that was announced on January 13. However, he left the company 11 days later with Makro telling Wholesale News: “Huw Edwards has decided to leave the business to pursue opportunities outside of Makro.”
The board changes began with Makro announcing the exit of members of restructuring specialists Alix Partners, who were appointed last June. Jens Koeppen, one of the consultants from Alix Partners, was appointed permanent finance director of Makro, and the other three representatives from Alix Partners left Makro.
Managing director J uuml;rgen Schwarze said: “The appointment of Jens Koeppen to the board and the departure of Alix Partners signals a new era for Makro UK.”
Makro also made further senior management changes designed to strengthen its customer focus, with Sam Newton, formerly head of advertising at Asda, being recruited to champion the customer and report directly to Schwarze.
The customer offer in food and non-food has also been given greater emphasis with two internal promotions. Mike Baker has been appointed (acting) procurement amp; merchandising director of food and Otto van H armelen has been appointed (acting) procurement amp; merchandising director of non food.
