Makro has entered into consultation with staff about the closure of three of its stores – Swansea, Wolverhampton and Coventry – from its 33-strong nationwide network.
Hannes Floto, managing director of Makro, said: “We are driving ahead with a strategic refocus away from an approach that was “all things to all businesses” to one that puts the hotel, restaurant and catering customer and traders at the heart of everything we do. To ensure we are as fit for purpose as possible, we have to analyse all areas of the business and look at where improvements can be made.
“One of these areas of focus is our store network. While it is upsetting to be entering into consultation with a small proportion of our staff regarding proposals to close three stores, in order to achieve our mission of being the first choice cash and carry wholesaler in the UK, we have to make tough decisions.
“With the full support and commitment of our global parent company the Metro Group, we will be making significant investments over the next 12 months and beyond.
“We’re going to build on the successes of our recently remodelled Manchester and Queensferry stores by modernising further stores.”
