Londis prepares to roll out fresh produce service

MBL is planning to make fresh produce available to all Londis retailers by early next year. Following successful trials with 50 retailers, all stores serviced by the group’s depot at Andover, Hampshire, can now have their fresh produce delivered through Londis.

This offer will be extended to the rest of the retailer base following tests at the other depots in South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, and Thamesmead in south east London, due to be completed early next year.

The range includes around 70 pre-packed items of fresh fruit and vegetables under the Londis own label, including: large vine tomatoes, English Cox apples, broccoli and grapes.

Steve Carter, MBL head of buying for fresh, said: “Retailers order exactly what they want and we order precisely that same amount from the suppliers to deliver to our depots the next day, which minimises wastage.”

Retailer Brian Bradford, of Starcross, Exeter, said: “The quality is good. Products are fresh and the prices are competitive. We’re buying more and more through Londis rather than local suppliers.”
