Independent xmas growth

Budgens independent retailers reported excellent Christmas trading with sales showing an average like-for-like increase of more than 9% for the fortnight ending December 31, while on Christmas week ending 24 December, sales across the Budgens independent business were up by over 20% compared with last year.

Sales at Budgens in Chorleywood, owned by Vic and Jag Grewal, were up by 42%, and at the Crouch End store, which is next to a Tesco Express, sales were up 27% in the week commencing December 11 and up 36% in the following week.

Owner, Andrew Thornton said; “Our local customers are getting the message that we’re now an independent store and they are very supportive.”

Mark Torpey, head of independent retailer support at MBL, said: “Our independent stores now outnumber Budgens corporate stores and this excellent performance goes to show that progressive, well run independent community stores can compete successfully with the multiples even at Christmas.”
