Spar’s Northern Irish wholesaler, the Henderson Group, increased wholesale turnover by 16% and is on target for retail sales of £308m for 2005 up from £288m for 2004.
Henderson sales director Paddy Doody, speaking at the Spar Ulster Guild conference in Barcelona attended by 280 SPAR retailers and suppliers, said that the number of outlets serviced by the company has also increased from 262 to 288.
But he warned compliance was still the biggest failing among independent retailers. This was demonstrated by a recent poll of suppliers showing 50% did not think that independent retailers could be relied on to comply with promotional programmes and 38% believed that manufacturers’ POS does not even reach the shop floor.
“The biggest challenge facing us is to put the customer at the centre of everything we do. We must achieve greater compliance and be seen to deliver margin, value and service,” he said.
“In Spar we have access to programmes that make it easier to succeed in Features > Business, such as the Smart Savings Scheme, the Virtual Academy and the Operation Excellence programme.”
