Today’s recently appointed managing director Bill Laird outlined his background in food retail and said his experience had lead him to be an advocate of technology. He said technology could be used to improve the performance of retail businesses but that many independents were not exploiting these opportunities.
He suggested that wholesalers and suppliers should help independent retailers to introduce more technology and EPOS into their stores. He said: “I would like to see some sort of collaboration between wholesalers, suppliers and others in helping retailers make that first step.” He said 30% of the marketplace did not have EPOS and this represented a huge opportunity for the benefit of their business and the wider sector. He also said that wholesalers should provide retailers with intelligence on pricing in competitors.
Laird suggested that many suppliers needed to develop their understanding of independent retailers businesses and this in turn would enable them to help the wholesalers to provide a service better tailored to their customers needs.
