The silly season is upon us. Lanson and Piper Heidsieck Champagne at pound;15 a bottle at Morrison’s, half price LBV port at Tesco, 25% off all wines at Waitrose to name just a few.
Good for consumers, bad for independent retailers and us because there is no way we can reach any of these price points. Full marks to Spar, though, for promoting its exclusive bubbly at pound;15 a bottle. Champagne has had a bad year but this level of pricing should speed up recovery.
I shall be buying my Gold Blend in the new compact 150g refill pack from now on, providing the price is right. Nestl eacute; reckons the new pack will inspire consumers to buy a product that is not only great value but ‘reduces the environmental footprint’. But I do wonder why they spent so much money redesigning the glass jar recently.
We hear from friends in the business that most cash and carries are performing well in spite of the economic situation. One major competitor has grown its business by over 6% and improved margins dramatically over the past six months, helping to lift some of the gloom and doom that hangs over the sector.
