Mail order clubs and online wine retailers also traded very aggressively, some delivering at price points well below pound;4 a bottle.
We managed to increase sales, but not profitability, through our aggressive two for pound;8 and three for a tenner deals which matched, and in some cases beat, multiple and specialist offerings.
Fairtrade products have made a good contribution to sales over the past year. We are expanding our selection to include more chocolate confectionery, beverages, snack bars and wines.
Sourcing more products locally is one of our objectives for 2007. Farmers’ markets are proving to be very popular and we can do a lot more to help local producers place their products in front of the public through independent retail and catering outlets.
