Neil Barker, commercial director of Foster’s EMEA, highlighted Foster’s joint venture at Parfett’s depot in Stockport, called the Foster’s Wine Bar.
He said: “The average cash and carry depot is not the most conducive environment to sell premium wine, and we set about designing a new look and fixtures from first principles to make wine displays more attractive and easier to navigate for customers.”
He urged wholesaler to stock wine. “Stock wine, do it right, and take your share of nearly pound;1.5bn of sales.”
He added: “As the population ages and people’s lifestyles evolve, so the penetration of wine continues to grow. And with over 70% of all wine consumed within three hours of purchase, this is a natural fit for the convenience retailer. Crucially, each sale offers high retail spend and attractive margins compared to other core categories.”
He then offered some examples of shopping opportunities, the mid-week purchase, the Saturday night party and the laid back Sunday.
“The key to success in this category is simple – cater for all occasions with a range that reflects a variety of styles and price points, present the product clearly to help the time starved shopper make informed choices, with efficient merchandising.”
