Welcome to the first edition of a new section within ProWholesaler devoted to the foodservice sector.

With the intense battle going on in the retail arena over the unfair practices of the major multiples, it is understandable that much attention has been focused in that direction, but it has tended to overshadow another vital and vibrant element within the wholesale trade.

This section, which will appear every month from now on, will redress the balance. It will profile the key players in the foodservice sector, examine and analyse the market trends and issues affecting them, and highlight some of the new developments in the products wholesalers supply to the hundreds of thousands of foodservice and catering outlets in this country.

While future issues will profile some of the companies more traditionally associated with the foodservice sector, I make no apologies for choosing an organisation more usually thought of as a retail specialist to kick off this first issue.

Landmark Wholesale has a proud heritage of serving retailers, but with members such as DBC and Blakemore Foodservice, and national coverage, it has the potential to be a major force in the foodservice sector and is determined to become one.

Also in this edition, Peter Backman of Horizons gives an overview of the market, and drills down into data on some of the most profitables sectors, and there is a snapshot of some of the products and promotions likely to be featuring prominently in PLOFs over the next few months.
