Eight multi-millionaire wholesalers make it onto the Asian Rich List

Prakash Thakrar, head of the HT amp; Co Cash amp; Carry Group this month took top honours in the Food amp; Drink category at the Asian Business Awards.

Thakrar (pictured with BBC presenter Sonali Shah who presented the awards) received the Food amp; Drink Business Award, sponsored by soft drinks company Sun Mark, at the ceremony which took place at a gala dinner to celebrate the publication of the annual Asian Rich List.

At the same event Bestway Cash amp; Carry chairman Sir Anwar Pervez OBE received the Eastern Eye Lifetime Achievement Award, while Sun Mark chairman and founder Dr Rami Ranger received the Business Personality Award in association with Bristol Laboratories.

The Asian Rich List features 101 millionaires whose overall net worth has now reached £51.5bn – an increase of £6.5bn since last year. The top 10 names represent 71% of the total.

Top of the list are the Hinduja brothers who have interests in numerous global businesses ranging from media to finance, oil and gas to name but a few. Their net worth has risen by around £1bn to reach £13.5bn. They are followed by Lakshmi Mittal, the steel magnate worth £12bn. In sixth place are Simon, Bobby and Robin Arora worth £1.3bn, whose business interests include the Liverpool-based discount retail chain B amp;M Bargains. Bestway chairman Sir Anwar Pervez comes in at eighth place – worth £1.1bn, in 16th place worth £410m is Bestway’s CEO Zameer Choudrey, in joint 31st place each worth £245m are Bestway directors Abdul Bhatti, Adalat Chaudhary and Bestway Cash amp; Carry MD Younus Sheikh, while in 37th place are Pradip and Manish Dhamecha worth £175m and in 89th place worth £60m is head of HT amp; Co (Drinks) Prakash Thakrar.
