Drink industry must take responsibility

Paul Downing, business unit director for Diageo GB, said that the industry was facing a challenge: “How to celebrate and facilitate the positive culture of drinking alcohol while working with other stakeholders to address the negative one.”

Addressing this problem is something that Diageo has been working on and Downing said the industry should take an active role in encouraging consumers to drink responsibly. “We also need to ensure responsible sampling and promotional activity in-store, and with the rapid move into HORECA (hotel, restaurant and catering) that the cash and carry and wholesale channel is demonstrating, in-store also means in pubs as well.”

Downing recommended promoting responsible drinking messages in-store and on alcohol advertising.
