Ross Gourlay (pictured), MD of wholesaler Glencrest Limited of Glasgow, has been voted in as tthe new chairman of Sugro UK. Gourlay replaces Peter Youings, of Youings Wholesale of Barnstaple, who had completed his three-year term of duty.
Gourlay founded Glencrest with his brother Fraser as a retail company but launched into wholesale in 1996. He became a Sugro member in 2009. He appeared on hit TV show Dragon’s Den to promote the development of an energy drink, branded “Nae Danger”, for which he won the Dragons’ support and investment. However, he decided not to proceed with the concept.
“My aim is that Sugro continues to grow its volumes and negotiating powerbase,” he said. “Many members are looking for new markets and product ranges to increase their customer base and turnover, and it is important that the centre provides this diversification. It is strategically important to continue to develop IT services for members and provide accurate data to enhance trading performance and negotiations”.
Outgoing chairman Youings added: “I am pleased that Sugro achieved double digit growth each year over the period I was chairman. I am particularly proud of the increase [to over 2,000 stores]in Retail Club members, and the developments in marketing which now enables Sugro members to personalise marketing material and promote selected products to meet their individual trading needs. I wish Ross well and am sure that he will oversee continued success for the Group”.
