Depot transformation taking place in Glasgow

Work has begun on transforming the old Sher Bros Cash amp; Carry into a one-stop wholesale depot under the Bestway amp; Batleys Wholesale banners for customers in and around Glasgow.

Building work is scheduled to finish in July and its business as usual until then with sales in line with expectations. Once completed, the refurbished depot, situated in the heart of Glasgow city centre, will have more than doubled its trading space to more than 100,000 sq ft – enough for 7,000 pallet spaces.  Several new departments are also being added to provide customers with a complete retail and catering offering. These include:

  • Licensed: The new depot is now licensed with a core range of 150 beers, ciders, wines and spirits skus available. Once building work is complete a full range of alcohol will be introduced
  • Chilled amp; Frozen: More than 150 metres of freezers are being installed to offer a comprehensive frozen retail and foodservice range
  • World Foods: Ethnic catering customers will be serviced via a new halal butchery section to complement the ethnic food business while increased aisles given over to ethnic ingredients and world foods

A new senior management team is running the depot with Pat Collins ex-Batleys Cambuslang, United Springburn and Trademarket as the new general manager. He is supported by deputy manager Laurence Ward, ex-Bestpets Batleys Cambuslang.

David Livingstone, operations manager for Scotland said this week: “All we have is half a shed at the moment. Once everything is complete we’ll have a bigger shed. What’s important is that we engage local retail and catering businesses to come along and see the transformation for themselves. The response from customers has been nothing short of phenomenal even though we are currently working with limited space and are not fully operational. Sales are up over the last few weeks, customers really love the inclusion of the new chilled and alcohol sections and have really got behind Best-in own label.

“What’s really encouraging too is that all Lifestyle and Lifestyle Express customers have signed up to our Xtra Local retail club and a few to Best-one. There has also been significant interest from new customers in our symbol and retail club offer and over time we will look to enlist these retailers into the group. Things are progressing extremely well and I am sure that the new depot will be a massive hit with customers.”
