After a long search for suitable sites, Costco will open its 16th UK depot at Bristol on June 2.
Managing director Francis Ball told ProWholesaler preparations for the new 125,000sq ft depot were going well.
“We have been visiting small independent retailers in the area to tell them about the opening and we have received a very warm reception,” he said. “Retailers in the area are pleased there will be some competition for their business. Registrations are running well ahead of normal this much before an opening.”
The new depot, just off junction 18 of the M5, will be managed by Gerard Rafferty, who previously managed Costco’s Liverpool depot for several years.
Ball said it would stock the standard national Costco range, but it would provide for local demand. For instance, the standard cider range would be two or three SKUs, but for the Bristol depot it was likely to be five or six.
He said his company’s top priority was offering the lowest pricing and that Costco research suggested it could offer 15% saving against the best cash and carries and 25% against the major multiples.
