Spar is growing fresh food sales in Scotland with the use of new core chilled range checklists produced by its Scottish wholesaler, CJ Lang Son.
The core chilled range consists of lines which have proven successful in CJ Lang’s 83 company owned Spar convenience stores. It was developed using sales data covering seven months across the whole range from bacon to dairy to ready meals.
The checklists are featured in the weekly Spar newsletter. They incorporate a basic core chilled range for smaller stores with limited space, and a medium core chilled range for stores with a greater capacity.
Gordon Airth, fresh foods controller at CJ Lang, said: “Our company store analysis has proven that the key to profitability is stocking the correct range of fresh foods and ensuring availability and good merchandising. Many products in the core chilled range are Spar own label incorporating both Spar Value and Spar Treat Yourself products.”
He said that having a core chilled range re-assured retailers that they were top selling lines and financially beneficial for profitability. It also meant retailers were able to provide a fresh foods solution, particularly at a time when healthy eating was on consumers’ minds.
