A number of lessons can be drawn from a comparison of the history of the Irish and British wholesale sectors, according to Dr Jim Quinn, director of business studies and language programmes at Trinity College’s School of Business Studies in Dublin.

Contrasting the success of the Irish independent sector in combating the multiples with the UK experience, Quinn said the independent sector in the UK needed to unite to promote itself far more vigorously.

He said that while the multiples in the UK had positioned themselves as the consumers’ friend, in Ireland lobbying by the independent sector had persuaded the majority of consumers that multiples were “a menace to society”.

Quinn said there was also a need for a well-resourced campaign to lobby Government for a more equitable market place.
