Scottish Spar wholesaler CJ Lang is investing heavily to ensure the new EU Working Time Directive legislation will not affect delivery service levels to its retailers.
Named Best Retail Delivered Wholesaler by the Scottish Wholesale Achievers (SWA) at the 2005 awards ceremony, SWA judges stated their admiration for the company’s near perfect service levels to customers.
The new legislation relating to the number of hours a driver is allowed to work will have a major impact on the company’s current transport operation and costs. Currently, 53 drivers service almost 400 Scottish Spar retailers. CJ Lang operates 39 vehicles and clocks up an average 80,000km per week with ambient, chilled and frozen deliveries.
Several measures have been implemented to maintain these service levels and comply with the requirements of the Working Time Directive.
The measures include the recruitment of an additional five drivers and an overhaul of the existing delivery schedules and routes to ensure the most efficient use of the company’s vehicles.
