Foodservice wholesaler Caterfood (SW) of Paignton has attracted a wave of new customers after launching a fresh fish delivery service.
Mark Felton, managing director of Caterfood and a main board director of the Sterling Supergroup, decided to open the operation after talking to fellow members, Castell Howell Foods, which successfully sells fresh fish.
Caterfoods operations manager Greg Clarke joined from a fish merchant and has a great deal of experience in the field. Caterfood chose West Country firm Riddlers Quality Fish as its supply partner, and customers place their orders on day one to receive delivery on day two. The fish is delivered packed with salted ice in sealed polystyrene containers.
Felton reports that selling fresh fish has brought in new customers who are also purchasing frozen, chilled and ambient products, and the addition of fresh fish has not affected sales of frozen fish which continue to grow.
He added: “Caterfood has always had a reputation for service and quality and we are delighted to be able to offer our customers the best local fresh fish available. This initiative has attracted a wide range of catering customers who have not dealt with us in the past. We opened 20 new accounts in the first week and the numbers have grown steadily since then.”
