Meals & More, the nationwide charitable campaign run by delivered wholesaler, Brakes, has won the CSR Award at the Foodservice Packaging Association Awards.
Meals & More was created ‘to ensure that children do not go hungry, particularly in the holidays when there is a lack of structured help’.
It is driven by Brakes and 30 of its suppliers, who supported 42 clubs in some of the most deprived areas of the UK in 2016, providing around 10,000 nutritious meals in the summer holidays alone to almost 2,000 children, and holiday activities for those children who normally benefit from free school meals.
Welcoming the award, Meals & More project manager, Pem Hulusi, said: “We are delighted to receive this award as tackling child poverty is a huge challenge and it is important that we raise this important issue publicly. We thank the FPA for helping us to do that and to Northwood, who signed up to help earlier this year, for nominating Meals & More.
“Holiday hunger is a stark symptom of UK child poverty, and without programmes like Meals & More, many families would really struggle over holiday periods. These valuable holiday clubs will not only deliver tasty, nutritious meals but also offer fun activities that teach and encourage healthy lifestyles. They also aim to offer parents and children much-needed social support to tackle isolation and enhance their employment opportunities.”
Brakes says its long-term vision is to ‘help alleviate child poverty with clubs in a local, supportive environment that boost health, attitude and life aspirations for children of all ages from challenging backgrounds.’
