Brakes is launching a new local sourcing initiative to coincide with the start of the strawberry season.
In a pilot scheme in Cornwall, it will be offering the first pick of locally grown Elsanta strawberries to restaurants and catering establishments buying from its Bodmin depot.
If it all goes to plan, Brakes is hoping to extend the scheme to other growing regions around the UK once their strawberries are ready.
Brakes commercial director Heidi Easby explained: “Our customers have been telling us of the growing importance of fresh produce grown by local specialists and we’ve responded to this by forging links with a local grower to make local produce more accessible. This is true local sourcing of a key product at the best time of year, which in turn has the added advantage of reducing food miles.
“Caterers who buy our strawberries have complete confidence – they know exactly where their strawberries are from, they will arrive in the best condition and have the satisfaction that they are using locally grown fruit and supporting local businesses. What’s more they can add value to their menus by highlighting seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.”
