Booker Group’s delivered arm, Booker Direct, has won a 10-year euro;500m contract from the prison service, partnered by DHL Exel Supply Chain.
The contract is to supply prison shops within more than 130 public sector prisons across England and Wales.
Booker Direct will supply the food and retail expertise and will deliver the products to DHL depots, which will then handle delivery to the prisons.
Under terms of the contract, DHL and Booker Direct will standardise the products available to prisoners, rationalising the range to include 750 product lines from tins of tuna to stamps and telephone credits. Prison governors will choose the right product mix for their population.
Booker Direct managing director Mark Aylwin said: “We are proud to be involved in this venture and look forward to developing a market leading service with our extensive buying power, expertise in wholesale and experience in servicing national accounts. Booker Direct and DHL have an extensive history of successful collaborations and we are delighted to have won such a prestigious contract. I am confident we will build a robust, reliable and industry leading service.”
A full handover from existing suppliers will be complete by the end of March 2009, following a phased process.
