Blakemore Retail, the wholesaler AF Blakemore’s division which runs some 300 Spar stores, has raised £6,300 for the Childline charity after running a series of “Stop for Tea” fundraising events at 18 of its stores at the end of last year.
A combination of efforts were seen across the stores, including a mad hatter-themed tea party, and refreshments. The company’s charitable trust, the Blakemore Foundation, donated food and drink up to the value of £150 to support the event.
All the proceeds will go towards the ChildLine Schools Service, which has been set up to give primary school children, the awareness they need to recognise abuse and to seek help sooner.
Charly Meehan, NSPCC Corporate Account Manager, said: “Since our partnership began in 2006, Spar has raised over £3.8 million for the NSPCC and ChildLine.
“Stop for Tea is a fantastic way to raise even more money for a great cause. The events will bring staff, friends, neighbours and the local community together, and will hopefully help us achieve our £500,000 fundraising target!”
Top fundraising store was the Spar in Terrace Road, Aberystwyth whose week-long Stop for Tea cake sale raised an impressive £2,200.
The organiser of the event, Darell Goolding, assistant manager said: “The event was only possible due to the massive team efforts from all our staff and the number of hours of their own time that the whole team put in.
“The team spent their own time making and serving tea and cakes on the stall from 9.00am to 5.00pm for 8 days. We gained additional support from approximately 15 to 20 local businesses in the area who we’d also like to thank for supplying raffle prizes. Above all, the support from our fantastic customers, was staggering.”
