Blakemore and YMCA open social enterprise

Blakemore Trade Partners and YMCA North Staffordshire have launched their very first SPAR social enterprise in Hanley, Stoke on Trent.

The joint venture,1,500sq ft site, in Harding Road, Stoke on Trent has funding through Blakemore’s co-investment scheme and the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership’s Regional Growth Fund.  A number of companies, including Laing O’Rourke, Ellis Hillman and Poole Dick Associates are also supporting the scheme.

Blakemore Trade Partners has provided all staff with a full induction and training including SPARkling Service, active selling, effective merchandising and Level 2 Food Safety. The store provides 12 new jobs – many of which filled by customers who have taken part in the YMCA’s employability programmes and all profits made in-store will be reinvested to extend the YMCA’s specialist services.

YMCA North Staffordshire helps to support young people to become independent and contributing members of their communities. Each week nearly 2,000 people access the charity’s employer-focused educational programmes, family services, health services, conference facilities and sports and youth leadership programmes. By shopping at SPAR, customers will be directly investing in young people across their community.

In addition to a wide convenience range, the SPAR store will feature fresh self-serve Costa Coffee, news delivery, lottery and free ATM.
