Alfa C C gets extra cash to fund expansion and improved service offer

Glasgow-based cash and carry Alfa Wholesale has announced plans to expand its product range and service operations following additional investment into the business supported by RBS – just three years after being devasted by a fire.

Today’s member Alfa will invest funds into new vehicles to grow its newly-launched customer delivery service and also intends to expand its range of specialist Asian, Middle Eastern and Oriental foods. The plans follow the completion of a successful “buy out” deal which put the business into the hands of the Nasim family which had previously co-owned it for the past 24 years.

Alfa Wholesale began trading in Glasgow in 1982 and has grown its operations since that time to now cater for a broad range of independent retailers, caterers and fast food operators throughout Scotland. The company suffered a major set-back in 2012 when a fire devastated its premises but the business recovered and is now one of Scotland’s leading wholesalers.

The company responded to the steady downturn in tobacco sales and decline of independent grocery shops by diversifying its product offering to cater for more food retailers, especially ethnic restaurants and fast food outlets.

Alfa’s joint managing directors are brothers Zahid and Shahid Nasim.

Zahid said: “Following the buy out we see a great future for this company. With RBS’s support we are now investing in our direct delivery service, an important aspect to growing the business by ensuring we can offer greater flexibility and convenience to our customers. Investment in the business will also include further expansion of the ethnic food offering. This is a growing and very much untapped market for us where we’re developing a strong foothold with more and more customers across Scotland.

“Ultimately we want to expand the entire operation and we intend to open a bigger premises in Glasgow over the next two years to help facilitate this growth. We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with RBS in taking this vision forward.”

Lesley Stark, relationship director at RBS said: “Alfa is a solid business built on its close customer relationships and longstanding track record of being a wholesaler of choice. The Buy Out deal enables the Nasim family to take the company to the next stage by diversifying its service and product offering and building its customer base across both new and existing markets.”
