5m refit for Makro store

Makro has re-launched its store at Rayleigh in Essex after a major refit that cost more than £5m and added 21,500sq ft.
The refit is the second in a programme of refits that began a year ago at the Charlton store in south-east London.
Expertise in fresh produce is a feature of the new store, following on from its success at Charlton. Over 300 cheese lines, 250 fruit and vegetable lines and an increase in fresh meat and fish products have all been introduced, as well as daily fish deliveries and a cut and collect butchery facility.
Twenty new jobs have been created by the refit, including specialists in meat, fish and wine who have been employed to provide customers with information, and three customer consultants who will visit customers at their premises and advise on the best practise and products to suit their requirements.
Store general manager Paul Wilson said: “Today’s customer demands more and we are successful because we listen to their needs and move with the times. We have invested heavily in Rayleigh, particularly on the fresh offering, and we think our customers are going to be very pleased with the changes.”
