The Pallet Network (TPN) has chosen a 21-strong fleet of Still R70-20 LP gas forklift trucks for its new pallet handling distribution hub at Rugby, Warwickshire.
TPN recently moved to a purpose-built 224,000 sq ft hub, just off Junction 1 of the M6 at Rugby, and handles more than 20,000 pallets for over 70 members.
Mike Payne, operations manager at TPN, said, “I had specific criteria for choosing the forklift trucks. First, as lorries actually drive into the hub from outside, it was obvious that the floor would get wet.”
This has health and safety implications as most forklifts loose traction under acceleration and braking in wet conditions.
Payne tested a variety of trucks and found the Still R 70’s electric drive system did not lose traction in the wet.
Payne said another consideration was the trucks had to work for nine hours per night. “That’s an arduous workload, and we wanted forklift trucks that would offer reliability while retaining value for money.”
