Blakemore recruits new head for Spar

Dennis Evans has been appointed managing director for AF Blakemore’s Spar distribution business based at Willenhall in the West Midlands, which supplies more than 550 independent Spar shops throughout the Midlands, north Wales and north London and has nearly 200 company owned Spar stores.
Evans replaces John Giles who will retire early next year after 32 years with the company. Commenting on his successor, Giles said: “The appointment of Dennis will enable Blakemore to continue its successful growth in the convenience sector.”

Evans joins Spar’s largest distribution company from Somerfield, where he was regional director responsible for managing the retail operations of 132 stores in Scotland and northern England.

In 1985 he joined Iceland Frozen Foods, which then had 90 stores. He progressed with the company and achieved the position of regional controller responsible for 252 stores.
Following Iceland, he was head of retail for CRS and responsible for marketing and retail operations for 470 stores and 17,000 employees.

In his new role he becomes responsible for development of the Spar independent Features > Business, trading and distribution.

Commenting on the new appointment, group managing director Peter Blakemore said: “John Giles has been an integral part of the management team that has seen annual turnover grow from £5m in the year he joined us to over £600m.

“John will be hard act to follow but I am delighted that we have secured the services of such a proven and experienced retail professional as Dennis Evans and am confident that with him as part of the AF Blakemore team our growth is set to continue.”
