With the opening of its first depot in Mumbai, Zunaid Bangee has been appointed as managing director of Booker India.
Bangee has been with Booker for 25 years. He first worked at the then Linfood Cash and Carry in Preston, as a weekend branch assistant while studying business and finance.
Most recently in the UK he was north west regional director, responsible for 30 Booker branches and £600m turnover, and he started on the Mumbai project in February 2008.
His responsibilities now include the set up and management of the Booker India Features > Business, to see how the store performs before looking at an expansion plan. He also has the job of introducing the cash and carry concept to India as supermarkets and modern trade retailers have only been around in the past few years.
Bangee said: “We have already faced many challenges, as one would expect when opening a business on a foreign soil. Every country has different rules and regulations and India is no different.
“India is an exciting challenge for me and very different to the UK.
“This is an expanding market, therefore doing business here opens up many opportunities. I have a great team and they are all willing to learn about the wholesale cash and carry concept.”
