The 2007 annual conference of the Federation of Wholesale Distributors will bring a topical focus on the food and drink marketplace and the need to protect against further erosion of consumer choice.
The timing of the conference comes when the Competition Commission will be well into its considerations of evidence presented to its probe into market domination by the big four.
The FWD Council believes that the CC has a once in a lifetime opportunity to protect the status quo as far as consumer choice and diversity are concerned by putting the brakes on more big four expansion in any of the market sectors – superstore or local shops.
Papers on how wholesalers are defending and promoting the independent retailer will be presented at the conference, which will be held at the Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club on March 26 27.
The Council of Members of FWD is currently designing the programme for the conference to ensure that any new moves by the CC in the run up to the event are reflected on the platform.
FWD director general John Murphy said: “We have a few months to go yet and the situation could be quite fluid early in the New Year as we get more indications of the mindset of the CC.
“Delegates to the conference can expect top level reviews of the CC inquiry – it’s inevitable that the CC will be the top of the bill as we come into next Spring,” he said.
The conference will see a continuation of the now traditional Federation Golf Day for the industry’s keen golfers.
