“We are living in interesting times,” said Julian Hunt, director of communications for the Food amp; Drink Federation.
The Food amp; Drink Federation’s key role is to speak on behalf of food and drink manufacturers with an aim to getting government to understand the facts of the industry.
Pressure on the food industry has been mounting in the last three years and is no longer focused primarily on the retail sector.
Caterers are coming under scrutiny for calorie information on menus, products, portions and promotions. He said that according to the government’s Foresight Report on obesity, published in 2007, obesity is forecast to cost the nation £50bn a year in the near future.
Hunt said: “Brakes and 3663 are among 43 foodservice providers to publish healthy catering commitments.”
He challenged wholesalers with the question: “Are you aware that these debates impact you?” And he asked them to ensure these issues are part of their business planning as he believes that a united industry front is vital.
