John Maxwell Jones of Burgess Stores in Kent has been rewarded with vouchers for Makro.
Jones won a competition to find the local independent grocery store showing the best involvement in and support for the local community.
He held a National Cuppa Day tea party during National Independents’ Week, for senior citizens as his contribution to the My Shop is Your Shop campaign and sponsors the local Tea Club which meets every week.
Jones is also planning to take part in the forthcoming National Walk and Shop Day on September 16.
Alan Toft, MSYS chairman, visited the store to present Jones with vouchers worth pound;500 to be exchanged for goods at Makro cash and carry, nationwide supporters of the MSYS activity.
Toft said: “John is typical of the 48,000 or so independent convenience stores, newsagents and rural shops in the UK. He personifies their unsung value as family businesses which provide convenience and stock the brands local people want – in addition to time for a chat and interest in the neighbourhood.”
