Scottish wholesalers were told the diversity of their businesses was one of the strengths of the sector.
Speaking at the Scottish Wholesale Association Annual Conference, Norman Wemyss, SWA president, said: “I remain totally convinced of our success as a trade association. I am equally convinced that our current position of strength relates directly to the diversity of our membership and activities.”
The theme of the conference was diversity equals strength and Wemyss spoke about his own business: “At 3663, I am involved with a UK-wide foodservice operation with a starkly different management structure from the majority of our membership. But we all share the same business goals, regardless of our size or geographical location – we want to grow sales and profits; boost our market share; enhance our margins; and control operating costs.
“Providing the best possible customer service is also a shared goal. Indeed, many members highlight this as being their point of difference over their competitors.”
Wemyss spoke of the importance of membership and how it can benefit smaller companies to have them come fully on board. He also mentioned the importance of supplier support and that relationships “across the board has never been better.”
