Consumer demand for local produce has prompted 3663 to step up its provision of locally sourced food, Des Bell, director of marketing at 3663, told the conference.
Bell said the first challenge was that there was no accepted definition of local so 3663 had identified 10 regions across Great Britain and had then drilled down to the counties within each of the regions. It then started creating ranges identified by the food’s region and county.
Bell said 3663 had begun creating local food hubs for local distribution, and that the hubs could also be used to give local or regional brands wider national distribution.
Currently, he said, 3663 had been supplying local food in Scotland, the south west, and Wales for some time and a hub in East Anglia was now in operation.
In addition a south east hub is due to begin operation in January, and Bell said 3663 was working with other regional food groups and was actively seeking local food suppliers.
